Planning: The Story

Intro:

Again, I’m thrilled to share the current state of my portfolio as I am in the planning process for my portfolio project.

Today I decided to meet with Jorge Rey III at his house to discuss his story and how he made a glorious comeback from injury.

The Meeting

I met with Jorge Rey III at the Everglades High School soccer field in Miramar just as the sun was setting. Jorge, a captain who usually commands the pitch in his #8 jersey, sat on the bleachers instead of the turf.

As we talked, he described the exact second his season changed: the "pop" during a pivot, the sudden silence of the crowd, and the terrifying realization that he was no longer "Jorge the Soccer Star," but "Jorge the Injured Player."

He was incredibly open about the "dark months"—the isolation of watching his teammates from the fence and the pressure he felt to "tough it out" even when his knee felt like glass.

Analyze

My conversation with Jorge solidified the path for me on the "Hero's Journey" as I originally thought this would all be physical therapy and gym montage style story.

But after hearing about Jorge's loss of identity, such as, not knowing who he was without a "ball at his foot," made me change my focus for the project from the physical to the psychological.

I saw that the "toughing it out" culture is more than just about physical pain; it's a mental straitjacket.

This interview has confirmed that I am headed in the right direction with the magazine that has to be less of a medical journal and more about the psychological depths with high-impact images that correspond to his internal struggles.

Here are some of the notes that I took, when Jorge was telling me his story:

I. Identifying Characteristics And Profile Information:

  • Full Name: Jorge Rey III is one of South Florida's premier student athletes.

  • Association: Jorge is associated with Miami FC and the Everglades High School Gators (located in Broward County, Florida).

  • Position: Junior Captain of the Gators. Wears jersey #8.

  • Position: Midfielder (referred to as the "pulse" of the Gators). He is a tactical playmaker who is the key to the attack and has the ability to anticipate plays before they develop.

II. Description Of The Incident:

  • Nature Of The Incident: A non-contact injury caused by a single "simple turn" (a move that Jorge has performed since he was five years old).

  • Based On The Senses: Jorge "heard it" before he "felt" it (the "big pop" sound associated with an ACL tear).

  • Mental State: Upon realizing he had sustained a serious injury, Jorge immediately felt sad and depressed as though he was going to become irrelevant ("no one will ever remember that I was here").

  • Recovery Timeline: Was isolated from football for six months prior to returning for the 2026 football season.

IIIIdentity loss:

  • A specific psychological issue widely seen in elite youth sports and it has been coined "identity loss" or "Ghost on the Bench."

  • Social Erasure: This describes the change from "the guy everyone counts on," to "the guy everyone feels sorry for."

  • The Ghost Effect: This describes the feeling of being present physically at team functions but absent emotionally or professionally from the team because your "jersey" is no longer available.

  • Team Dynamic: The realization that the team will move forward regardless of your injury is more painful for Jorge than his surgery.

IV. The "toughness" myth:

  • Represents a sociocultural critique of the way grit is portrayed in Broward County.

  • The Deep Pools of Talent: Because there is so much competition, the culture of the sport is such that every athlete views their injury as an "erasure" because there is a replacement for you.

  • Pre-Injury Warnings: Jorge discussed hiding "niggling injuries" for several weeks out of concern for appearing to be weak (loss of his captaincy) and from shame of not being able to perform at his previous level.

  • Locker Room Culture: Jorge exposes the unspoken locker room rule as, "If you can walk, you can play." New Thesis: An athlete's value should not be based on statistical performance or the ability to withstand permanent injury in order to play.

V. Holistic Approach to Rehabilitation:

  • The first part of Jorge's journey of recovery was focused on both physical and mental recovery.

  • Physical Recovery: To physically rebuild his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), he engaged in traditional physical therapy.

  • Mental Recovery: In order to separate his sense of self-worth from how he performs as an athlete, Jorge spent a significant amount of time with his counselor.

  • Outcome of Holistic Approach: Jorge now identifies himself as a leader, student and friend rather than just as a soccer player.

VI. Return to Soccer (2026):

  • The "glory" of Jorge returning to the field is not based on the number of goals he scored, but on how he views the game differently.

  • Gratitude: Every time Jorge practiced or played, he viewed it as a privilege instead of a normal routine.

  • Courage in Acceptance of His Vulnerability: By admitting he was "broken," Jorge was able to achieve a greater remission of his emotional issues surrounding the injury.

  • Protective Leadership: Jorge has encouraged his teammates to recognize that they are more than just their bodies, and he spoke up and intervened when he saw them continuing to play through an injury.

Quotes for Reference

"I heard it before I felt it... the first thing I thought wasn't 'it hurts.' It was 'I’m done. Everyone is going to forget I was ever here."

"You sit on the bench in your street clothes, and you feel like a ghost. You’re there, but you’re not there."

"If I see a teammate limping now? I’m the first one to tell them to sit down."

Reflect

What comes next is the photography. I need to edit the pictures to reflect this "prestige" style. I’m thinking of using high-contrast, black-and-white photography for the "Isolation" section of the article, then transitioning into vibrant, saturated colors for his return to the Everglades pitch. The goal is to make a 16-year-old from Broward County look as iconic as a World Cup hero.
